We have a number of amazing committees that connect with our members, the School of Physics, and the wider community! If you want to get involved, consider joining one (or more!) of the following committees (you can join through our Discord server).
Excellent Adventures
Excellent Adventures works with everything academic: we organize engaging, interactive lectures led by current and former students on specialized topics in physics. Plus, we offer valuable academic guidance to help you navigate your journey in the field. Our goal is to help people get a better idea of what their time as students will look like and provide them the appropriate resources for it.
Outreach
The Outreach committee is our primary interface with the public. Our dedicated Outreach Committee is a team of 4-8 students that regularly sends members to interact with our local community. They host physics demonstrations at educational events, to date including tabling at K-12 STEM nights, presenting an expo at the Atlanta Science Festival, and developing Spark, Spin, and Freeze. Our goal is to make the beauty of physics widely available and easily accessible, bypassing the technical jargon and math that can seem intimidating.
If you’re interested in collaborating or asking for our committee to host a demonstration, please contact us at sps.gatech@gmail.com or send a message via the Contact Us page.
Physics Field Day
Physics Field Day is a high school physics competition hosted by Georgia Tech’s Society of Physics Students in the Spring Semester, aimed at preparing high school students for AP exams and increasing interest in STEM. In this committee, members write AP-level physics exams for mechanics and electricity & magnetism and connect with schools across Georgia. We put a heavy emphasis on the outreach component of this event by inviting guest speakers, giving the students tours of our labs, and giving them presentations about opportunities with a STEM degree. This past Spring, we had about 120 students register for the competition from around 25 schools in the Georgia area.
Diversity
The Diversity Committee is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for all. Whether through staff and faculty talks or community survey projects, our goal is to give all students in SPS a voice and ensure that everyone knows they have a place here.
Fundraising
The Fundraising Committee raises money with cool and creative ideas! We organize and plan events that fund the club and suggest new ways to improve these events. Things like our annual Pumpkin Drop and Pie a Physicist events finance the other committees, our exciting semester trips, and all of the other fun events we hold throughout the year. So, if you are looking for ways to help expand what we can do in the future, join and contribute in any way you can.
Public Relations
Public Relations committee takes on the role of showcasing what SPS does and offers with the rest of Georgia’s Tech’s community and the broader ATL area. In the following year, we hope to promote our events to even more students, expanding our reach to other majors, and collaborate with like-minded groups and orgs around us.
Cookout
Welcome to the Cookout Committee! No not Cookout the restaurant, but rather the Physics End Year Celebration! We are a committee that meets during the Spring Semester to plan a big celebration with: a cool talk by a professor, an awards ceremony, and a free lunch! Come help out in making an amazing experience for everyone in the Physics Department!
Formal
The Formal Committee is behind the most exciting event of the year—the SPS Formal! From choosing the theme to designing decorations, selecting food, and curating the perfect playlist, this is your chance to make it unforgettable. Whether you’re brimming with creativity, have an artistic flair, or simply love planning a great party, we want YOU on the team!
