Fall Trip – BOSTON

This year, GT SPS took a trip to Boston, Massachusetts! Enjoy the following blog from some of our members on the trip:

“This Fall, SPS took 11 undergraduate students to Boston on our annual Fall Trip! It was an eventful and enjoyable trip for everyone. Over 3 days, the group got the chance to bond as they explored the city and participated in networking socials with the MIT and Harvard SPS chapters.

We left for Boston on Friday morning, October 12th, heading to MIT’s campus soon after landing. An officer of MIT SPS was kind enough to show us around their campus, and we even accompanied them to the boba shop for the upcoming event. Afterward, we met other physics students at a Boba Social, where we connected with MIT physics students about research and personal interests. The room was filled with laughter and engaging conversation with over 20 MIT students in attendance!

Before long, we had to rush to Harvard for a dinner social, we were running on a tight schedule! Upon arrival, they had already had Indian food catered, a buffet set up, and banquet tables, with at least 30 undergraduate and graduate students seated and ready to mingle! We were incredibly grateful to the Harvard SPS president for helping coordinate such a big event. We had a great time socializing with the Harvard students, and learned about the Pizzas and P-set event that they organize every Wednesday. We also pored through their extensive textbook collection, which included antique works from our favorite physicists and mathematicians, some dating back to the 18th century! They even showed us around their physics building, before we concluded the night with a bookstore stroll, J.P. Licks ice cream, and watching street rappers at Harvard Square.

The next day we explored Boston, starting at the Boston Commons and walking the entire length of the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail. We saw historic monuments including churches and graveyards from the Revolution. Our stops at old bookstores were equally enjoyable, where we always found our way to the Physics section. Lunch was at the popular Quincy Market, where some of us tried the famed New England clam chowder and lobster. We also saw a street performer’s act, where he courageously juggled knives!

After lunch, we walked through Boston’s charming Little Italy. We quickly stopped for cannolis at Bova’s Bakery and then took the trek across the Charles River to Naval Shipyard Park. We toured below deck on a ship, where we felt like a rag-tag crew (don’t trust us with a real boat). Afterward, we traveled back to Little Italy for dinner at Regina’s Pizzeria.

On our last day, we returned to Cambridge to glimpse into college life at Harvard and MIT. We saw Harvard’s libraries, dining halls, and student hotspots with the help of an attending student. We had lunch and boba before taking the T to MIT again. There, we investigated the MIT tunnels, where there are many classrooms and invention studios. Eventually, we found MIT’s banana room, where students can grab one to fuel them through their studies (and yes, we did take a few). Finally, we ate dinner in Chinatown before going to the airport for our flight back to Atlanta.

It was a memorable trip for Georgia Tech’s SPS members. Many friends were made along the way, and we appreciate the generosity of both MIT and Harvard’s SPS chapters in helping coordinate such amazing socials!”

We couldn’t pick which photos to feature, so here are a few:
